Ruby Sweetwine, age 77, passed away peacefully January 7, 2020 at Hope Hospice & Palliative Care, Providence, RI. Ruby was born in Montego Bay, Jamaica on February 6, 1942 to the late Lester Daley and Clarabelle Dehaney. She was the wife of the late John Sweetwine.
Ruby was employed by the Ministry of Labor as a clerical assistant in Jamaica for many years before migrating to the United States in 1985. After settling in the state of Rhode Island, Ruby became a faithful member of West Warwick Church of God, Then the Beacon Ave Church of God, Providence, Rhode Island.
Ruby began working as an Au pair for multiple families during her transition to the US. After some time, she became employed at Walmart for over 10 years before retiring and becoming a volunteer at The Mission Food Pantry. She also volunteer at the Cranston Senior center making dolls. During her time at the senior center Ruby enjoyed playing domino with friends
Ruby became foster mother to several children. As a member of the Urban League of Rhode Island, Inc., she was given the award for “Foster Parent of the Year” on December 3, 2006. Ruby was generous. She had a positive impact on many young people’s lives.
She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Lucretia Clarke, Loretta Clarke and Audrey Clarke. Ruby also leave behind her sister/friend Phyllis Daley, brother Errol Brown, 15 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, her beloved church family and a host of family & friends. She was preceded in death by four children, Veronica Clarke, Barry Clarke, Donna Cook, Athol Bernard. Also first husband, Baldwin Bernard.
Ruby by definition is the Latin name for the word “deep red gemstone”. Likewise, Ruby had a vibrant, sassy and sultry spirit. We will continue to honor her memory with beautiful rubies and the color red.
