Rosalyn Soares Obituary

Rosalyn Ann (Silva) Soares, a lifelong resident of Providence Rhode Island, died peacefully in her home surrounded by her family and loved ones on March 16, 2021 at the age of 69.

Rosalyn was born on August 18, 1951. She was the wife of Joao (John) Soares Jr. She was the daughter of the late Joao (John) Silva and Vivian (Rollins) Thomas. She was the mother of Stephen F. Soares of Oxford, Connecticut, and Angelite (Angel) A. Soares of Jonesboro, Georgia. She had 6 grandchildren; Ulani S. Soares of Baltimore, MD, Nyzhae A.K. Edwards of New Haven CT, Stephen F. Soares Jr., Sean M. Soares of Oxford CT, Ny’Lasia A.W. Rivera and Na’Jalise X. Rivera of Jonesboro GA. She was the sister of Vivian (Silva) Graham of Providence RI, the late Evelyn (Silva) Underwood of Warwick RI, Mary Silva-Frazier of Providence RI, and the late John Silva Jr of Exeter RI. She was the stepsister of Brian, Glen, Darin, Stephen, and Kenneth Robinson. She is also survived by her step-mother Carolyn Silva.

She grew up the oldest of 5 children and enjoyed reading comic books, horror novels and a movie enthusiast. Rosalyn enjoyed hanging out with her grandmother and specifically attending Ebenezer Baptist Church together.

After graduation from Hope High School, Rosalyn attended Rhode Island Junior College where she received an Associate’s Degree in Arts. From there she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree, from the University of Rhode Island and began her career in Human Services, at the West End Community Center.

Rosalyn married her husband and had two children, returned back to Providence where she has stayed for the last 40 years, while being a staple of her community.

She became the director of Refocus Group Home where she enjoyed and valued her time working with adults with intellectual disabilities.  This is where she provided guidance, while teaching her own children the values of treating all people, no matter what kind of disabilities a person may have, with respect and love.

After leaving Refocus, Rosalyn’s career continued to grow.  She proudly worked at the Providence Housing Authority, The Welcome Arnold Shelter and the Urban League, as the House Manager of the Safe Haven assisting the homeless population.

Rosalyn, however commonly known as, Roz or Aunt Roz to those around her was endeared and beloved. Anyone that took time out to speak to her, would be blessed by her laughter, advice and open heart.  She was so proud and affectionate of all her family and friends…. After one encounter, you were family to her!
