Norman K. “Charlie” Gray, a beloved father, grandfather, and community member, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication.
He was born on November 29, 1929, in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, to the late Wesley Briggs Sr. and the late Cora (Gray) Roussan.
In June 1951, Charlie proudly joined the United States Army, serving his country with honor until his discharge in April 1953. Upon returning home, he began working at Quonset Point and later at the Green Tobacco Company. In 1970, he began a 22-year career with Decorated Specialties Incorporated, retiring in May 1992.
Charlie married the love of his life, Jacqueline F. Osborne Gray, on November 8, 1951. They shared 50 wonderful years of marriage before her passing.
Together, they raised four children: Juan (Gina), Terri, Karen, and Norman Jr. (Wendy). Charlie was a devoted and loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather.
He leaves behind 8 grandchildren — Michelle (Denille), Kyle (Bianca), Juan “Bub” (Melissa), Nickea, Gia, Rashad (Jessica), Jariah, and the late Robin Carter Gray — 9 great-grandchildren — Kyle, Arianna, Ryan, Shaughn (Paige), Aaron, Amari, Eliana, Rashaan, Kristian, and Rashad Jr. — one cherished great-great-grandchild, Nilah — four god-children Terrell Osborne, Damon Gray, Takina Lee and the late Tracy Maddox-Brown.
The oldest of nine siblings, Charlie is predeceased by his brothers Arthur “Sonny” Gray Sr., Wesley Briggs Jr., and Steven Briggs, and his sisters Lorraine Harris and Linda Roussan. He is survived by his sisters Pearl Gailloux, Brenda Atkins, and Beverly Roussan.
Charlie was active in several organizations throughout his life, including the American Legion, Cape Verdean Progressive Center, and the Neighborhood Retirees Association. He was also a former member of the IBA, Masonic Temple, Elks Lodge, and 5-0 Organizations.
His commitment to his community and fellow veterans was unwavering.
Charlie will be remembered for his warmth, loyalty, and the lasting impact he had on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. His legacy of love and strength will live on through his family and the countless lives he touched.
He will be deeply missed.
