Our mom, Margarita Martinez, was born on February 22, the youngest daughter of Adelina and Emilio. From a very young age, she showed strength beyond her years. At just 15 years old, she made a brave and life-changing decision. She left the Dominican Republic and moved to Puerto Rico, a choice that would forever shape our family’s story.
In Puerto Rico, our mom became a young mother who worked hard every single day to raise her children on her own. Nothing was ever handed to her, but she never complained. She did what she had to do, always putting her children first. Later, she took another leap of faith and moved to the United States, eventually making Rhode Island her home. She left behind everything she knew so that her children and later her grandchildren could have more opportunities and a better life.
Our mom was a risk-taker, but she was also an optimist. She believed things would work out, and somehow, they always did. She worked for the State of Rhode Island for 15 years as a DCYF childcare provider, caring for others the same way she cared for her own family, with patience, love, and kindness.
She raised us with strong family values and deep Christian faith, teaching us to love, forgive, and stay strong no matter what life brought our way. We will always remember her beautiful smile, her gentle heart, and the way she made everyone feel welcome and loved.
Above all, our mom was our greatest blessing. She was a devoted mother, the most loving grandmother, a cherished daughter, an amazing sister, and a loyal friend.
Her love lives on through us, and her strength will guide us forever.
