Alice DaSilva Gonçalves “ Nha Niza”
4/1/39-12/27/22
Alice Gonçalves was born in Cabo Verde, Africa. She emigrated to the United States at 41 years old, widowed with 10 of her 12 children and settled in Providence, Rhode Island. In addition to her biological children she was proud to have been a godmother of 23 more children, whom she always treated like her own. Her home on Rhodes St. was where many called their first home on their immigration journey. She provided community, support and guidance as they navigated through the transition. When her youngest son Nelson brought home his best friend Stanley Bois, he also became a son to her. Alice was a dedicated member and a distinguished contributor to her parish. Alice will be remembered for her generosity, genuine grace and resilience.
Alice is survived by her children Maria Da Ressurreição DaSilva, Luis DaSilva Lopes, Ana Maria Tavares, Ernestina DaMoura-Moreira, Nelida Alice DaMoura, Jose Manuel DaMoura, Sandra DaMoura, Maria Dos Santos DaMoura, 18 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. In death she is preceded by her parents Arsenio Gonçalves and Luisa DaSilva Gonçalves, husband Antonio Lopes DaMoura, her sons Jose Jorge DaMoura (infant) Joaquim Lopes DaSilva, Antonio Lopes DaMoura, Nelson Jorge DaMoura and daughter Maria DoCarmo DaMoura. She is also preceded by her very special granddaughter Belinda Lopes Moniz.
