Abelardo Hernandez
On Saturday, January 30, 2021, at 5:07pm, Abelardo “Abe” Hernandez, loving husband, father, friend, and outstanding community member, left this world to join our Lord in the kingdom of heaven.
Abe was born on September 25, 1956, in Guayaquil, Ecuador to Carmelina Ochoa Ricaurte and Segundo Hernandez Perez. He immigrated to the United States on October 25, 1972, where he resided in Queens, NY for 25 years. Abe attended and graduated from Flushing High School. On June 30, 1978, he entered into civil union with his high school sweetheart, Maria E. Larrea (Hernandez), and on June 18, 1988, he entered into the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony with her. They raised two sons, Abel and Leonardo, and one daughter, Marybel. On August 11, 1997, the Hernandez family moved to Providence, Rhode Island.
Everywhere Abe went, he left a huge impact. In New York, Abe served in the PTAs at his children’s schools. At Saint Michael’s church in Flushing, Queens, Abe helped start the Hispanic Association. He was an avid soccer player, sometimes playing four games a day on the weekends. In Rhode Island, Abe continued his love for soccer, serving as President of the Guatemalan Soccer League and Vice President of the Rhode Island Soccer Association. Most recently, he served as the Vice President of the Board of Directors for Union Deportiva de Rhode Island (UDRI), where he was also the program director for soccer. Abe also coached children within the league and taught soccer in after-school programs through Brown University at the local elementary school, William D’Abate.
As much as Abe loved soccer, he also loved his community. In Olneyville, he was truly a neighborhood advocate, working with officials, officers, and neighbors to keep the community clean and safe. He served on many committees within the community, including RIOP (Rhode Island Organizing Project) and Blessed Sacrament Church, where he also served as a trustee at Blessed Sacrament School. He was instrumental in securing permits for the annual walks of the Virgin of Guadalupe and the Good Friday march. Abe’s legacy is a testament that “only a life lived in the service of others is worthwhile.”
All of us can attest to what a compassionate man he was in everything he did. He was a true family man in every sense of the word. Abe brightened up a room with his fun demeanor and warm smile. He did not look at race, ethnicity, or color; Abe opened his doors to everyone. He leaves behind an incredible legacy of family and community.
Abe was preceded in death by both parents Carmelina and Segundo. He is survived by his wife Maria; his three children Abel (Kristen), Marybel (Francisco), and Leonardo; his two grandchildren Jonathan and Juan Mateo; four brothers, two sisters, and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held in memory of Abe, but due to Covid-19 restrictions, it will not be public. We will be holding a drive-up farewell celebration at a later date. We will keep friends posted through social media.
