Hubert Roy Jefferies “SUDIE”, passed away in Providence, Rhode Island on Sunday July 15, 2018. At 82 years old, he was the ninth child and devoted son of the late Armstead and Pearl Lee (Fowler) Jefferies. Hubert was the beloved husband of the late Mrs. Betty Jean Jefferies.
“UNCLE SUDIE” as he was affectionally known was born in Wendell, North Carolina on February 16, 1936. At the age of sixteen Hubert “SUDIE” and his family moved to Providence, Rhode Island. In 1956 he married Betty Jean Ashley and they began their journey as husband and wife, in a union that lasted 58 wonderful years. As a strong family provider Hubert worked tirelessly to maintain a comfortable living for his family. He worked in many different trades; be it a farmer, marine iron welder, maintenance manager and even a businessman who for more than a decade owned and operated a neighborhood convenient store. SUDIE was a good provider.
During his life “UNCLE SUDIE” was a devoted church member of several churches. In his later years he was an active member of the United First Born Church of Jesus Christ in Providence, Rhode Island. Under the leadership of his brother Pastor Claude Jefferies, he was a dependable and strong supporter of his church community.
In addition to working hard, “UNCLE SUDIE” enjoyed playing his guitar, fishing, boxing, karate and traveling. He especially loved traveling with his wife Betty and in-laws Barbara and Raymond Johnson. This foursome enjoyed traveling throughout New England, Nebraska, Utah, Canada, Georgia, Maryland, and the Caribbean.
“UNCLE SUDIE” also had other ways of enjoying life; to put it plain and simple he loved to be “In Charge” of any and everything. He knew how to do a lot of things and had a fair amount of knowledge of everything. Be it churning butter, plowing a field, welding a pipe or making pulled barbeque, he always let you know if you were doing it the wrong way or “His Way”.
And let us not forget his constant teasing and practical jokes.
At some point or another “UNCLE SUDIE” had to be told “SUDIE “You Play Too Much!!”
But believe it or not; we still enjoyed his pestering and jokes.
Hubert Roy Jefferies is survived by six children; Jeannie Ashley of Lake Spivey, GA., Sheila Jefferies of Omaha, NE., Teandra Jefferies of Rex, GA., Christopher Sherill, Mark Jefferies and Kevin Jefferies all of Providence, RI., one aunt, Rachel Mongague of Zebulon, NC., two siblings; De-Lois Alexander of Reading, PA., and Pastor Claude Jefferies of Providence RI., eleven grandchildren, one great granddaughter, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his siblings; Mitte Smith, Anna Mae Wise Turner, Emma Lee Walker, Herman, Thurman and Jimmy Jefferies.
~He will be missed by all~
