George Williams Obituary

Mr. George Craig Williams was born to George Willie Williams and Dorothy Helena Gilliard-Williams in Patuxent River, Maryland.  He was fourth of six sons.  In George’s formative years, his parents established his religious and spiritual foundation in church and the Word of God. George was baptized at Cranston Street Baptist Church in Providence, RI.  The family later joined Olney Street Baptist Church where he attended Sunday School, served as an usher and was a member of the Baptist Youth Fellowship.  He was also a member of the Boys Scouts of America.  One of George’s favorite childhood activities was competing in the Annual Soap Box Derby with his brothers Anthony and Andre’, with the help of his father and his older brother, Henry.

George was educated in the Providence, RI public school system where he graduated from Classical High School in 1975.  While in High School, he excelled in sports and as a member of the basketball team was voted All Providence and All New England and earned the name “Sweet Water Williams.”[S1]

George matriculated at Howard University in the fall of 1975 where he majored in and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology. Due to his magnetic personality and compassion for everyone he encountered, George cultivated many lifelong friendships. Having mastered the principles of friendship he was selected to be on the 1977 pledge line of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.  George was initiated into the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. on March 27, 1977 under the auspices of Alpha Chapter on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC. He was Number 16 on the line, "CRB's. Supreme Uncontrollable Thunderbird 16 (or simply, the "Thunderbirds"). For 41 years, George and his Thunderbird Line Brothers exemplified the Fraternity Motto, "Friendship is Essential to the Soul." During his time on Line with the Thunderbirds, George was bestowed with the Line Name “Chicken George” and was universally and eternally known as simply “Chicken.” During his time at Alpha Chapter, George immersed himself in the work of the chapter, particularly on the Social Action Committee, working with schoolchildren and the elderly in the vicinity of Howard's campus. George served as the Assistant Dean of Pledges for the 1979 Line, "Floyd T.'s 24 Dons of Distinction," In 1980, George served as the beloved Dean of Pledgees for "Boss Gray's 24 Chics of Boston," who he shepherded to a Lampados Roundup Championship and the successful completion of the pledge period. As Dean of Pledges in 1980, George earned another permanent nickname, “Dean Chic,” a title of love and respect that followed him all of his days in Omega.

George's work in Omega continued on the graduate level as a longtime member of Alpha Omega Chapter in Washington, DC. During his tenure in Alpha Omega, George was very active on the Social Action Committee. George volunteered with the "We Feed Our People" effort, in which the Fraternity led the community in providing hot meals

and warm clothes for the District of Columbia's homeless population on the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. George participated in this effort for over two decades. Also, George participated in the chapter's Christmas basket delivery drive on an annual basis.
