Florence D. Diggs Colton gained her angel wings on Nov 29, 2019 in Warwick, RI, at age 65.
Florence was born Sep 15, 1954 in Monrovia, Liberia to the late Moses M. and late Rebecca (Johnson) Diggs. As a youth, Florence attended many schools and ended up leaving the schools for various reasons. It was not until she attended Lott Carey Baptist Mission that she found solace in a school. She loved the school so much that she despised going home when the school closed for vacation!
In pursuit of a better life, Florence migrated to the United States (New York) in Dec 1973 with her first love George Stanley Mason Sr. In Jan 1974, Florence gave birth to George Stanley Mason Jr. In 1976, she moved to Providence, RI and attended Johnson and Wales University. In Jan 1986, Florence married Samuel R. Colton and gained a step-son, Samuel A. Belmore. In Nov 1990, Florence gave birth to Denzel Zeke Colton. The marriage dissolved in May 2003.
Florence became a Certified Nursing Assistant in 1981. She spent the majority of her 25+ career working at the General Hospital of Rhode Island Medical Center. She received numerous awards for her unwavering love and dedication that she showed each patient.
Florence’s many interests included watching African and karate movies. However, her favorite pastime was listening to music, mainly African, gospel, and reggae, and partying with family and friends.
Florence is survived by her sons, George S. Mason Jr. (Danielle Daley-Mason), Cranston, RI; Denzel Z. Colton, Providence, RI; her step-son, Samuel A. Belmore, Bronx, NY; her sisters, Adama Diggs Morris (Alieu W. K. Morris), Lester Prairie, MN; Christine M. Diggs Touré (Yady Touré), Monrovia, Liberia; her brother, Moses Diggs Jr, Monrovia, Liberia; five grandchildren, Gazmine S. Mason, Cranston, RI; Nihzell A. Briggs, Providence, RI; Adonis I. Brown, Providence, RI; Harlem M. Walkie, East Providence, RI; and a granddaughter to arrive in Apr 2020; her nephew, Tevin T. Walkie, Providence, RI; her niece, SrA Mercedes D. Morris, Chicago, IL, United States Air Force; first cousins, Ellen Diggs Dennis Ottawa, ON; Catherine Diggs, Monrovia, Liberia; Eden Diggs, Monrovia, Liberia; Victoria Diggs, Monrovia, Liberia; Cecelia Diggs, Monrovia, Liberia; second cousins, Patrick Gurley; Joyce Cole; Vercia Thomas Copey; David Denis; Ellen Denis; and her other nieces and nephews back home in Monrovia, Liberia.
She is predeceased in death by her aunt, Saneo Diggs, Monrovia, Liberia; uncle, Sam Diggs, Monrovia, Liberia; her sisters, Comfort Diggs, Monrovia, Liberia; Judy Diggs, Monrovia, Liberia; Marie Diggs, Monrovia, Liberia; Roseline Diggs, Monrovia, Liberia; her brother, Nathaniel Diggs Monrovia, Liberia; and her first cousin, Betty Walkie, Newark, NJ.
