Roberta A Johnson

Roberta A. Johnson, 84, formerly of Newport, RI, passed away on November 16, 2017 at Bayberry Commons in Pascoag, RI.  She was born on January 26, 1933 in Baltimore, MD.  She was the daughter of the late Andrew and Miriam (Durant) Bridgets.

Mrs. Johnson was the wife of the late Chief Petty Officer Massey Johnson.  

She was employed by the Naval Education Training Center (NETC) as a supervisor at the Word Processing Center,  before retiring in 1998.  Prior to coming to NETC, she worked at the Veteran's Hospital in Providence, Papst Mechatronic Corporation in Middletown, and 24 years for an attorney in Newport.

At NETC, Mrs. Johnson served on many committees, including the Equal Employment Opportunity Committee and the Federal Women's Program.  She was a strong believer in community service and was active in many civic organizations including the Black Heritage Society of Rhode Island and the Urban League.  Her work as a Middletown Rotarian resulted in many students receiving scholarships for college.  She was also President  of the Black Cultural Arts Club of Newport, a member of the NAACP, and a past member of the board of directors of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center in Newport.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by her daughter, Dr. Wanda Ingram of Cranston, RI, her son Gregory Johnson of San Diego, California, two granddaughters, Veronica Johnson and Keesha Ingram, and one great-granddaughter, Amaya.  She also leaves a host of relatives and friends who will cherish her memory forever.
